Knox Update

Alright, so we use this blog not only to keep our family and friends up to date with what is going on in our lives, but also as a journal for our children.  So here goes one that isn't a super fun read.  We got a call yesterday letting us know that there was a cancellation at the Gastroenterologist that Knox was scheduled to see at the end of Dec, and that we could come this morning at 10.  So we made the trip up to Salt Lake City to see the specialist.  The visit went well.  We now have a direction in which we are moving to get answers to his chronic diarrhea.  Nice I know, but many of you already know this and know that it has been going  on since June.  The original Celiac disease test came back negative.  When we went today he said that that particular test can give false negatives, but he doesn't think that it is celiacs but that is the next test if nothing comes back on the first which is a stool sample...Haha...fun fun, since his poop is so runny and mucussy, we get to put Saran wrap in his diaper wait til he poops then pour it into a container and take it to the lab.  Sounds like it can get a little messy.  They are looking for red and white blood cells in his stool.  The Dr. thinks that it could possibly be colitis so we are following that route first, then a 3 day round of antibiotics to rule out a bacterial infection and then a 12 day cycle of super strength probiotics.  If all of that comes back clear and good on to the celiac testing and if that is clear on to a couple other steps...If all comes back clear then he will be diagnosed with a motility dysfunction that is unspecified and we will have to add more fiber and fat and cut back on liquid.  Are you all enjoying this ?  If it is colitis they will have to scope his bowels to try and find out were the inflammation is and then biopsy that section.  Oh ya and we have to take him off soy milk too and on to Rice milk, ugh, poor thing.
So that is where we are with our little man.  He is such a trooper.  He has the best temperament.  He is so patient and happy and I am anxious to make his tummy troubles go away.  He loves to wrestle with the boys outside and he will run and and say "push" before he pushes or "punch" before he punches.  We were at Ikea today and he told his daddy "daddy wait".  He is a clever little man.  He loves his big sister.  Presley had an awesome day today- no fits or crying out bursts... It was wonderful and weird at the same time to have such a happy child even when she was told no.

That is such a lot for the little man to be going though and the rest of the family. Just remember to stay positive, and to rest. Knox is a real trooper it must run in the family genes. Presley is such a good big sister. Big hugs and kisses for them both.

I am so sorry Knox! I am also so sorry for you, it is the worst when something is wrong with your lovie and there is nothing you can really do to help him. Hang in there, it will get better. It also helps that he is so stinkin handsome, who cares if his poop is beyond gross!

Hey! I know EXACTLY what you're going through. We did all the same tests last year with Kooper. It's disgusting and frustrating and you feel so bad for the little guy too. I even posted some lovely pics on my blog just so I'd never forget. For us, we never really got any finite answers. We were out the point where our next option was to scope him. The doc assured me it was not invasive but it just seemed like it really was to me and I wanted to try everything I could before we got to that point. After all the treatments for a bacterial infection, probiotics, not drinking juice, all the blood work, etc. I have just found that by keeping a close eye on his diet I can keep him pretty normal. If I slack he goes right back to the runs. Here's what has worked for us:

1st off we did a family wide fast for him and a blessing. Then I researched my butt off and found that it is somewhat common for toddler and they grow out of it. Since he was an infant I thought he had a dairy issue. That isn't the case. I think the main cause is whole grains. We eat TONS of pure whole wheat everything in our house. But for Koop...just plain white works much better. It drives me nuts because I hate putting that refined sugar and flour in him but for some reason is helps. I also add butter to a lot of what he eats (I never use it on any of our food but he needed the extra fat) and I was doing whole milk for a while but we're down to 2% now. I only let him have one cup of juice a day (he had NONE for several months) and that juice is 50% water. Finally, I have to closely watch his sugar. It's really not bad or hard at all and TONS better than dealing with the nasty diapers.

It's much better now too that he's out of diapers. The little bum doesn't get all red anymore! I hope you find some help and some answers. I really understand how frustrating it is!
